For most of my adult life, I valued freedom and autonomy above all else. But as I matured, I discovered something even more important was missing…
Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give it to no one. Ultimate freedom entails freedom from attachments, anything that could tie you down and make you vulnerable to hurt or sadness. Think of the image of a self-reliant man in the wilderness, independent, autonomous, free.
But in that wilderness, your heart — safe, dark, motionless, airless — it will change. It will not be broken; but it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love at all is to be vulnerable.
